Green awards, recognition and advocacy 


At Equinix, being “green” is part of being operationally lean but also doing the right thing. We’re always looking for new ways to reduce energy and water use in our data centres. We also seek to play an active role in making our business more green, and becoming a leader in evaluating and deploying innovative solutions. You can find some of our engagements and awards we have received as a result of our efforts below:


GPLA Awards

U.S. EPA Green Power Leadership Award for Excellence in Green Power Use

On 23rd October, 2017, Equinix was selected for recognition in the Excellence in Green Power category of the 2017 Green Power Leadership Awards. The annual awards recognise America's leading green power users for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market.


NAREIT 2016 Leader in the Light Award

On 16th November, 2016, the National Associate of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) honoured Equinix as one of nine winners of the 2016 Leader in the Light Award. Equinix won the data centres category of the award for demonstrating superior sustainability practices across all sustainability criteria, including ESG (environment, social and governance) practices.



Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles Signatory

Joint initiative with the World Wildlife Fund and the World Resources Institute (WWF/WRI) to help the private sector more effectively seek renewable energy from traditional utility partners and developers



Business Renewables Centre (BRC) member

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) initiative to build a collaborative platform aimed at accelerating corporate renewable energy procurement



MSCI Global Sustainability Indexes

As of June 1, 2015 Equinix is a constituent of this environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index



U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership

In 2015, Equinix debuted at a rank of 18th in the Top 100 of renewable energy users in the nation (United States only), and 6th in Technology & Telecom group.

As of 24th April, 2017, Equinix ranked 16th in the Top 100 of U.S. renewable energy users – reporting a total of 571,084,274 kWh of renewable energy used in 2016 and representing 43% of its U.S. load. Equinix came 7th in the Technology & Telecomgroup. We were also named in the Long Term Contracts group for having executed two contracts to purchase green power for five years or more.


American Business Act on Climate Pledge signatory

Equinix was one of 154 companies that signed a pledge to demonstrate their support for action on climate change and to demonstrate their ongoing commitments to climate action.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award

Recognised for leading the industry by building and maintaining state-of-the-art, green data centres across the Asia-Pacific region.

Awarded for 2015 & 2014


2014 International Datacentre and Cloud Award for Environmental Sustainability

Equinix received this award recognising AM3 for its innovative cooling and energy sharing design, resulting in optimised power usage effectiveness (PUE) and significantly reduced CO2 emissions.



2013 EU Code of Conduct Energy Efficiency Award

Awarded to our AM3 IBX for adopting innovative technologies to improve data centre energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption



2012 Data Center Dynamics Award: Green Data Center

Awarded for our innovative cooling design at our AM3 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre in Amsterdam
